Trauma from medical conditions and procedures

Stress, trauma, and trauma therapy in the context of medical treatment

-A talk by Sarah Zorica Mitic
Dr. sci. med., TRE® global certification trainer and trauma therapist

This is a free talk and open to anyone.

Medical conditions, acute and chronic diseases, undergoing medical treatment procedures, and long-term and repeated hospital stays bring numerous uncertainties, worries, and stresses. They can even be experienced as a threat to life itself.

This can result in long-term stress and even trauma. Even when everything goes well from a medical point of view, this can be the case. The result can be significant, with lower quality of life and reduced capacity to function and thrive in both one’s personal life, relationships, and at work.

Sarah Zorica Mitic

Read more here.

It is especially important to tread carefully and be aware of the potential trauma onset when working with children, as traumas at a young age can mark individuals for a lifetime.

With knowledge about the subject matter, the potential consequences of suffering traumas can be reduced, prevented, or helped afterward.

In this talk, Sarah will draw on her experience as both a medical doctor and a trauma therapist to explain how medical conditions and treatment can be traumatic, how to prevent or reduce stress and trauma in the treatment setting, and how body-oriented methods like TRE®, Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting, etc. can be used to repair and restore the capacity for self-regulation in the aftermath of trauma.

About Sarah Zorica Mitic

Dr. sci. med. Sarah Zorica Mitic is a retired medical specialist with 40 years of work experience in the health systems in several different countries.

While working in Norway, Sarah developed a special interest in patients who had trauma from previous hospital stays or encounters with illness and the health system. Sarah also has extensive experience in pain therapy and has written a pain treatment manual published in two languages.

Sarah is a also cancer survivor and has first-hand experience with complicated surgeries both as a medical professional and as a patient. She went through several life-threatening surgical interventions herself. That experience gave her an insight into and a better understanding of traumatic reactions.

As a specialist in anesthesiology, Sarah worked in several countries and was the head of an anesthesia department at the Clinical Center of the University of Belgrade, Serbia. In Serbia and Norway, she was part of medical teams that operated on patients with complex conditions, and she also helped the patients prepare for those interventions.
